An electric car usually wins on day-to-day running costs in Ireland: lower motor tax, simpler servicing, and cheaper "fuel" if you can charge at home. But the size of the gap depends on prices that move - electricity, charging tariffs and diesel at the pump all change - so the honest answer is not a single number. Here is how to work it out for your own driving.
Motor tax
A battery-electric car (BEV) is the lowest motor-tax band in Ireland, at EUR 120 a year. That is the only hard figure in this comparison, and it applies to any BEV, used cars included.
A diesel is taxed higher, on its CO2 emissions. The exact amount depends on the car's CO2 band and on which registration-era tax system it falls under, so there is no single diesel figure to quote - check the official rate for the specific car you are looking at. The point that holds for every comparison is the direction: the EV sits in the cheapest band there is, and the diesel pays more.

Servicing
This is where an EV quietly pulls ahead. A battery-electric car has far fewer moving parts than a diesel: no engine oil to change, no timing belt, no clutch, and no exhaust or emissions system to maintain. On top of that, regenerative braking does much of the slowing for you, so brake pads and discs tend to wear more slowly.
The result is that routine servicing on an EV is generally simpler and less frequent than on a diesel. We are deliberately not putting a euro figure on it - your actual bill depends on the car, the garage and the work needed - but the pattern is consistent: fewer things to service means fewer things to pay for.
Fuel vs charging: do the maths
This is the part that moves with prices, so treat it as a method rather than a number.
The running cost of "fuel" per 100 km is the energy used per 100 km times the unit price:
- Diesel: litres per 100 km x the price per litre. Pump prices include excise and carbon tax.
- EV: kWh per 100 km x the price per kWh.
Plug in today's prices for each and compare. The thing that decides the EV's number is where you charge. Charging at home, especially overnight on a cheaper night rate, is typically the cheapest way to run an EV. What actually moves the number
Three things decide how big the running-cost gap really is for you:
- Your annual mileage. The more you drive, the more the per-100km fuel difference adds up.
- Whether you can charge at home. Home charging is what makes the EV's "fuel" cost lowest; rely on public rapid charging and the gap shrinks.
